The Mean Streets of Social Media
Have you ever had one of those weeks? I’ve been on the receiving end of criticism as it relates to my social media activity. In a little over 10 days, I’ve been reported to MailChimp for SPAM, publically outed on Twitter as a SPAMMER, and accused by the moderator of a LinkedIn discussion group as partaking in ‘cheap advertising’. In every instance, my first reaction was surprise followed by wonder. After that, it gets a little murky.
So What's In It For Me?
Last year I wrote a post titled, 6 Reasons for Refusing LinkedIn Invitations. It garnered more comments than any other post I’ve written. It continues to attract decent traffic each month. The post describes my policy of only connecting with people I know. While it’s the most popular entry on my blog, I’m beginning to wonder if I haven’t made myself clear.
Social Media for Business: The perils of staking professionalism against popular opinion
You’ve heard the comparisons, right? Twitter is like a cocktail party. Facebook is a shopping mall. Twitter is the street. Myspace is high school. LinkedIn is a business conference. YouTube is home movies for business. Each day another label is added trying to explain the many social media phenomena. Conventional wisdom tells us if we can just understand it all better, we can get rich quicker and become more popular at the same time. But here’s the problem; social media doesn’t do anything we weren’t already doing. Behaving differently than I always have seems like a bad idea.
Social Media Myth Busters
You’ve heard the myths, right? Social media is a panacea for business owners, especially small business owners. Hop over to Twitter, find a few friends on Facebook and link your network with LinkedIn and, pretty soon, you can sit back and watch the cash roll in. All you have to do is set up a few profiles and you’re on easy street. That’s just not how it works.
7 Great Places to Register Your RSS Feed
Do you have an RSS feed on your blog? My web and graphic designer, Ryan Briggs, insisted I put an RSS feed on both my news items and my blog. I didn’t think I needed one in either place but I took his advice. Or I should say, I didn’t make a noise about it and he implemented his own recommendation. I’m really glad he did.
9 Essential Ways LinkedIn Improves My Business
Are you getting the most of LinkedIn? I’m always surprised when I hear people say they need to think about opening an account on LinkedIn. I understand the reservations professional people have about creating a social media persona. When it comes to LinkedIn, the benefits far outweigh the perceived risk associated with many online tools.
Social Media: The Good News for Small Business
Do you have a social media marketing plan? If you’re a small business or sole trader, a recent report says social media marketing is delivering substantial benefit impacting the profitability of the company. As a social media practitioner, I wasn’t surprised. (NOTE: I did not say I was a social media “expert”) What did surprise me was the significant increase in positive results in the past year.
6 Reasons For Refusing LinkedIn Invitations
Have you experienced an increase in LinkedIn traffic? I’ve been hit with a spate of “join my network” invitations lately. Frankly, I don’t like it. While LinkedIn is a social media tool, it’s not designed for open networking. Mostly, I don’t know the people contacting me. Depending on my mood, I’ll just click on the “I don’t know this person” button. More often, I’ll write to the sender explaining my reasons for refusing the invitation. Last week I got a snide reply back accusing me of not understanding how to network. I think it’s time to explain my position on LinkedIn more clearly.
