Have you ever had one of those weeks? I’ve been on the receiving end of criticism as it relates to my social media activity. In a little over 10 days, I’ve been reported to MailChimp for SPAM, publically outed on Twitter as a SPAMMER, and accused by the moderator of a LinkedIn discussion group as partaking in ‘cheap advertising’. In every instance, my first reaction was surprise followed by wonder. After that, it gets a little murky.

Did you see the article called 7 Deadly Sins of Twitter? It’s an evergreen post from October 2009 that pops up from time to time. I read it again the other day and posted it to my Facebook page. While the theme is irreverent – a great technique to get more readers to your blog – the advice from Zoey Dowling is spot on.

You’ve heard the comparisons, right? Twitter is like a cocktail party. Facebook is a shopping mall. Twitter is the street. Myspace is high school. LinkedIn is a business conference. YouTube is home movies for business. Each day another label is added trying to explain the many social media phenomena. Conventional wisdom tells us if we can just understand it all better, we can get rich quicker and become more popular at the same time. But here’s the problem; social media doesn’t do anything we weren’t already doing. Behaving differently than I always have seems like a bad idea.

You’ve heard the myths, right? Social media is a panacea for business owners, especially small business owners. Hop over to Twitter, find a few friends on Facebook and link your network with LinkedIn and, pretty soon, you can sit back and watch the cash roll in. All you have to do is set up a few profiles and you’re on easy street. That’s just not how it works.

Last Friday evening, the City of Perth kicked off the Christmas season with their annual Turning on the Lights event. Promising, This magical show will feature a variety of entertainment and the grand arrival of Santa into the City, the event missed its mark – by a lot. While I suffered through the evening, I couldn’t help but consider the marketing lessons to be learned.

Advocating Change with Social Media and Content Marketing

Posted by Sarah Mitchell on 26 August 2010 | 0 Comments

Why do you run a content marketing campaign? When do you use social media? Most businesses have the same answer for these questions and it always concerns getting more customers to spend more money. What if your business had all the customers they need? What if those customers were unlikely to spend much time using social media tools? What if you had little control over how much money you could earn. Would it make sense to invest in a digital marketing strategy? You bet.

Do you have an RSS feed on your blog? My web and graphic designer, Ryan Briggs, insisted I put an RSS feed on both my news items and my blog. I didn’t think I needed one in either place but I took his advice. Or I should say, I didn’t make a noise about it and he implemented his own recommendation. I’m really glad he did.

Excuse Me, That's Not a Word

It started with a little tweet about alot. Soon after, I tried to get through a post from a respected blogger and marketer who lost me with “impactful”. Not realising I was starting something, I asked the Twitterverse if “impactful” bugged anyone else and what non-words did they find annoying. It turns out I’m not the only one harbouring a few pet peeves about the English language.

Do you know what the word “ideation” means? How about “subitise”? Until recently, I didn’t know what they meant and wasn’t even sure they were actual words. I have four dictionaries on my desk, two synonym finders and two thesauruses. I couldn’t find either word in any of the eight books.
